London

• Imperial College has a variety of people interested in networks including the following:-
  • The Complexity and Networks programme at Imperial is based in the Electrical and Engineering Building of the South Kensington campus of Imperial College (location postal code SW7 2BS; Lat. 51.498973 Long -0.176307).
    Includes Tim Evans Kim Christensen from Physics and Henrik Jensen.
  • The Intelligent Systems and Networks (ISN) Group in Electrical Engineering dept includes Erol Gelenbe, Jeremy Pitt and Moez Draief.
  • Biological Networks Research Group including Natasa Przulj.
  
  
  
• The Brunel Complexity Community at Brunel University on the western edge of London.
  The multi-disciplinary Brunel Complexity Community is a diverse group of people drawn from many schools across the Brunel campus, including Geoff Rodgers.
  
  
• QMUL School of Business and Management has several people interested in networks including Pietro Panzarasa and Tore Opsahl. The latter has a nice web site including several data sets.
  
  
• UCL (University College London) has several groups interested in Networks and Complexity.
  • CoMPLEX focuses on issues relating to life and medical scientists.
    There is a CoMPLEX mailing list Complex-mail, email address Complex-mail AT the usual UCL email address of ucl.ac.uk.
  • Networks and Services Research Group contains people like Richard Clegg who coorganises the Mathematics of Networks meetings.
  • CASA (Centre For Advanced Spatial Analysis) at UCL London.
    Includes Michael Batty.

• The Centre for eResearch (CERCH) has some interesting research going on, and the CERCH seminar series has some interesting speakers.



• Diagnosing Vulnerability, Emergent Phenomena, and Volatility in Manmade Networks is run from Queen Mary, University of London.
  has links with both the Dynamical systems group of the School of Mathematical Sciences and with the interdisciplinary Networks Group in the Department of Electronics at QM. Includes Rui Carvalho.

• The Complex Systems Group at the Open University (Milton Keynes) is led by Jeff Johnson.
  
  
• Complex Agent-Based Dynamic Networks (CABDyN) at Oxford.
  A multidisciplinary "research cluster" taking including connections with the Maths Dept Mason Porter, Nick Jones at the Physics Dept, Felix Reed-Tsochas at the Saïd Business School. There are other people interested in networks such as Gesine Reinert and Pao-Yang Chen.

• Steve Gregory at the Department of Computer Science of Bristol University.
  Has several papers and associated software on overlapping communities.
  
  
• Manchester social networks group (MSNG), University of Manchester
  Includes Martin Everett who is involved with UCInet. Note there are links with the statistical physicists such as Alan McKane and people such as Bruce Edmonds at the Manchester Metropolitan University.
  
  
• Centre for Research in Social Simulation - CRESS at University of Surrey, Guildford. A lot of work on Agent Based Modelling (ABM) by people like Nigel Gilbert.

• Namur Center for Complex Systems (NAXYS) in Namur, Belgium.
  This has Renaud Lambiotte and there are good contacts with Louvain.
  
  
• Laboratory of Computational Engineering at the Aalto University School of Science and Technology (includes what was the Helsinki University of Technology).
  Home of various interesting people including the Complex networks and agent-based models research group of Jari Saramäki.
  
  
• Large Graphs and Networks at Université catholique de Louvain (UCL) in Belgium.
  Includes Vincent Blondel.
  
  
• Stochastic Dynamics and Complex Systems Group, University of Limerick, Ireland
  Some of the work of James Gleeson and collaborators considers online social networks and various processes on networks such as cascades.

• The CNLL (Complex Networks Lagrange Laboratory), part of the ISI (Institute for Scientific Interchange), in Turin.

• IFISC (Institute for Cross-Disciplinary Physics and Complex Systems), Palma de Mallorca.
  Several interesting people here whose work includes aspects of network physics, such as Maxi San Miguel and Raúl Toral.
  
  
• The LINK-group.
  A largely Hungarian collection of researchers, mainly bioscience and social sciences. Includes many links to other resources. Includes Peter Csermely who has written the book entitled Weak Links
  
  
• The complexnetworks group is a French based group.
  The web pages of this group contain several useful network routines including format conversions. The team leader is Matthieu Latapy.
  
  
• Alex Arenas at the Dept of Computer Science and Mathematics, Universidad Rovira i Virgili, Tarragona, Spain.
  Has several papers, data and associated software for networks including some for community detection.

  Contains some introductory material on networks and code for network clustering (community detection). Also note his involvement with the interesting Eigenfactor project.
  
  
• The Eigenfactor project.
  Uses ideas about information flow, networks, clustering (communities) in the context of scientific journals. Gives an evaluation of the influence and performance of journals (e.g.\ cost effectiveness), their categorisation in terms of fields of science and so provides a map of the structure of academic research.
  
  
• Complex Networks at University of São Paulo
  A Comprehensive list of papers, books, software, and data sets. Many links to other web sites and researchers. From L. da F. Costa, F. A. Rodrigues, G. Travieso and P. R. Villas Boas.
  
  
• The Collective Dynamics Group - ISERP at Columbia University.
  Looks at the applications of modern maths, physics and computational techniques to the social sciences. Members include Duncan Watts. The are several useful data sets here.

• The Center for the Study of Complex Systems at University of Michigan.
  A multidisciplinary centre looking at non-linear, dynamical and adaptive systems. Includes Mark Newman who has an excellent list of available network data sets (see below for further comments on the American College Football network of Girvan and Newman).

  Researcher at Los Alamos with interests in Statistical Physics, Random Processes, Nonlinear Dynamics and Complex Systems.
  
  
• CASOS Center for Computational Analysis of Social and Organizational Systems, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, USA.
  Long list of tools, models and data sets, not all limited to social science.
  
  
• The NetWiki at University of North Carolina
  This is a set of pages on all aspects of networks but centred round the work on networks done at UNC, in particular by Peter Mucha and his collaborators. Some good lists of here of software, and data sets, including several data sets not found elsewhere. I particularly liked the network of network data formats and the nice pictures. Also contains a good list of reviews and introductory material on complex networks

• Complex Systems Society
  The purpose of the Society is to promote the development of all aspects of complex systems science in the countries of Europe, as well as the whole international scientific community. The series of ECCS meetings is organised by the society.
  
  
• ASSYST Complexity
  An EU project running from 2008-2011 but closely aligned with the activities of the Complex Systems Society. Has a useful newsletter which includes a list of upcoming meetings and conferences.
  
  
• International Network For Social Network Analysis (INSNA)
  This claims to be "the" professional association for researchers interested in social network analysis. Information on various activities on the website including the Sunbelt series of international conferences.
